Henry Cantu, who goes by the moniker Can2, makes art with a can of spray paint, but he doesn’t call it graffiti. He and other artists affiliated with TPY-Urban, a local paint supply store, prefer the term “aerosol art.” They are working to push against the negative public perception of graffiti art, which often is associated with urban blight and illegal tagging

Gillette Air Conditioning invited Cantu to turn a 9,600-square-foot wall into a canvas, where a sweeping Texas flag transitions into the San Antonio skyline in throwback Spurs Fiesta colors. The company hopes his artwork, paid for by a city initiative, will turn a graffiti-marred eyesore into a spectacle viewable from I-10.

Formerly known as The Paint Yard, TPY-Urban fills the aerosol paint niche in San Antonio. The store focuses on high-end paint that generally cost $4 to $9 a can. Scott Louie, the store’s owner, said TPY-Urban caters to younger artists, a different market than Michael’s or Hobby Lobby.

It’s not just a paint store, Louie added. TPY-Urban sells T-shirts, watches and backpacks, but more than that. It’s become a hub where working artists can find community, supplies and a platform.

Cantu is partnering with Gillette for a project that will allow children to “finish” Cantu’s mural with art of their own. The fun is set for 10 a.m.-noon Friday at 1201 W. Elsmere Place. Supplies and art direction will be provided. Participation is on a first-come, first-served basis.
